There can be no debate that Google is the undisputed leader when it comes to search engines, and since Google is now a publicly traded company, the Internet giant has taken many steps to ensure that its users and shareholders remain happy and content with their practices. This desire to please has also translated to Google’s AdSense program—an affiliate marketing vehicle in which website owners can place content relative advertisements on their sites and earn money when those ads are clicked. As a result, Google has cracked down on any and every improper usage of the AdSense program, so if you’re thinking about "playing against the rules," you may be in danger of having your account suspended or permanently banned. To help you avoid this fate, in this article we highlight some of the violations which may affect your account.

AdSense Violations and How to Avoid Them

Hidden or Disguised Text

If you’re going to use Google AdSense blocks on your website or blog, it is imperative that your site visitors be able to differentiate between your content and your advertisements. This means that your content and advertisement text has to be large enough to read and that your background is a different color than your text. Failing to make these changes could result in account suspension until the problem is corrected.

One and Only One

Google does allow each of its subscribers a single AdSense account, and while this account can be used for up to 3 separate sites, attempting to open more than one account can quickly get you banned from participating in the program.

"Bot" No!

Loading your pages with bots—short for computer robots—is not only frowned upon by Google, but absolutely prohibited. This is called page cloaking and can quickly get you banned from the program. A good rule of thumb to follow is to refrain from any practice designed to trick your visitors into clicking on your ads.

Watch Your Links

While you cannot always control who is linking into your AdSense pages, you can control who you decide to link with. Make sure to check your links carefully and keep the number down to a manageable figure (not over 100) and watch carefully that your links are not being featured on sites with questionable or illegal content.

Selling Your Page Rank

Page rank selling has become a very common practice among Internet marketers, but if you choose to take part in this practice, especially on the "selling end," you can expect to have your AdSense account permanently banned.

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing, much like page cloaking, is a deceptive practice that is looked down upon by Google. In this practice, people load their sites with rich keywords and ads aimed at redirecting users to other pages. This is a definite no-no in the eyes of Google.

Duplicate Content

If you have multiple domain names with the same content, don’t expect to take part in the AdSense program. Google AdSense requires that you place different and original content on each page where you will feature their ads.

You may think that avoiding these deceptive practices requires nothing but common sense, and you’d be correct. However, there are many, many people who attempt to sidestep these simple rules in an attempt to maximize their advertisement click-through rate and thus increase their commissions. If you decide to go ahead with these types of "strategic cheating" keep in mind that sooner or later you will get caught (Google knows all the tricks and can quickly spot violators) and your account will be suspended or even permanently banned.
